Let’s give it up for this weeks featured ump, Derrick Wong from Etobicoke, ON.

Our friend Derrick has been an umpire for 16 years. Modeling his mentors Ed Sato and Warren Wiles, Derrick’s years of experience and charisma are well received by the slo-pitch community.

When asked what his favourite part of the job is, Derrick answered that it’s providing, “a service to be respected.” He values the interactions between player and official that encompass the tradition of sportsmanship on the diamond.

Over the years, Derrick shares he was fortunate to be part of numerous humbling and noteworthy experiences. One that resonates most strongly with him occurred during a Provincial tournament at Patrick Cummings Park. His memory from that day is as follows: “

A female ball player, being her very first time competing in the provincials, whose team had just been eliminated, came over to myself and said, “thanks” for one of the games I had umpired her team during the weekend. I asked her how was the experience, hoped that she had fun, and hopefully we would see her again at the provincials in the near future. The female player, replied how intimidating it was with all the teams involved, the size of the scoreboard, and the professionalism provided from the umpires. It was, ‘all over whelming’, but had a great ‘fun’ experience she’ll one day tell her grandkids about, and will definitely be back with new glove, shoes and maybe a couple of new bats if that is what it takes to play at provincials again. “

Days like these keep Derrick as passionate about the game behind the plate now as he was when he was a young, thriving ball player himself. He urges his fellow umps to enjoy the game and is excited for what is to come during the 2019 slo-pitch season.

Our next showcase umpire from Alberta is Pamela Crerar!

Pam has been an very active SPN Umpire for 8 years now, participating in many Provincial and the most recent 2018 National Championships in Leduc!

As one of our senior female umpires, Pam always brings a strong and "vocal" presence to any games she's in. Ensuring even the center-fielder can hear her calls!

With great game management skills, and a mutual respect for the players and teams - Pam takes incredible pride in being an SPN Umpire, and is also known to be seen dancing or singing in between innings. Comment a "💃" emoji down below to show our #dancingqueen some love!

Always a smile, and great approach to the game - we are very fortunate and proud to have Pam on our team!

Away from the diamonds, Pam enjoys and is very active with Volleyball and Wallyball. She has two sons, 23 and 25.
