Let’s give it up for this weeks featured ump, Derrick Wong from Etobicoke, ON.

Our friend Derrick has been an umpire for 16 years. Modeling his mentors Ed Sato and Warren Wiles, Derrick’s years of experience and charisma are well received by the slo-pitch community.

When asked what his favourite part of the job is, Derrick answered that it’s providing, “a service to be respected.” He values the interactions between player and official that encompass the tradition of sportsmanship on the diamond.

Over the years, Derrick shares he was fortunate to be part of numerous humbling and noteworthy experiences. One that resonates most strongly with him occurred during a Provincial tournament at Patrick Cummings Park. His memory from that day is as follows: “

A female ball player, being her very first time competing in the provincials, whose team had just been eliminated, came over to myself and said, “thanks” for one of the games I had umpired her team during the weekend. I asked her how was the experience, hoped that she had fun, and hopefully we would see her again at the provincials in the near future. The female player, replied how intimidating it was with all the teams involved, the size of the scoreboard, and the professionalism provided from the umpires. It was, ‘all over whelming’, but had a great ‘fun’ experience she’ll one day tell her grandkids about, and will definitely be back with new glove, shoes and maybe a couple of new bats if that is what it takes to play at provincials again. “

Days like these keep Derrick as passionate about the game behind the plate now as he was when he was a young, thriving ball player himself. He urges his fellow umps to enjoy the game and is excited for what is to come during the 2019 slo-pitch season.

Cameron Spence from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan is making his debut as our main attraction for this week’s edition of #humpday!

With 6️⃣ years to his name, Cameron vocalizes that his favourite part of the job will always be the opportunity to make the slo-pitch more enjoyable for those participating. He’s been playing himself since the 80’s and his love for being on the field and his commitment to game knowledge has inspired him to stay committed to, and active in, his most enjoyed pastime.

In this year’s Provincial Championships, Cameron witnessed an unassisted #tripleplay and described it as, “one of the rarest plays in ball.” Seeing something like that occur reminded him about the fire and drive he once felt on the other side of the game, and provided him with a reconfirmation of his already burning passion.

Cameron greatly respects individuals and teams who take an opportunity to acknowledge his efforts after a game. A simple thank-you or handshake makes him feel like he’s made a positive impact in a job that sometimes goes unappreciated. We love you, Cameron!!! 😙

Be sure to be kind to all of your umpires! They are an extremely vital piece of our SPN family and we couldn’t do what we do without them!

To his fellow umpires, Cameron emphasizes the importance of being in a good visual position for those nail-biter plays! He says that players rarely question calls when they see you’ve made the effort to get the best spot to see the action and are confident in your call!

Thanks for an awesome 6 years, Cameron! Here’s to #luckynumber7!
